Tell us about your business
Arthur Benjamin & Co was founded by the mother of two boys, Stephanie. When she struggled to find classic and traditional clothing for her two sons, she began making them herself. Their wardrobe soon began to draw the attention of others and she found herself creating beautiful clothing for other children at her dining table, until the early hours. Stephanie learnt to sew with her nanna as a little girl and still seeks her advice and skills now when she is making her new designs for each collection. All items are designed by Stephanie, and handmade using either roll-end fabrics, vintage fabrics or deadstock to remain as sustainable as possible. We pride ourselves in aiming to make each collection as waste free as possible, therefore we use remnants left from our designs to create hair accessories and also gift any remnants to other small business's too.
Tell us about the products you have entered
The Danbury Dress has been entered for so many reasons. One is that it is the first product we have made that had 0% wastage from start to finish. This was achieved by thoroughly planning out the design of the dress in order for it to be more efficient in textile usage. Then with any remaining fabrics, we created hair accessories to match the dress. The well-thought-out design also meant that the fit of the dress would last a child around 12-18 months of wear, due to the fact that the two-piece can be separated and worn through the summer months. The 100% cotton fabrics meant that with the correct garment care, it can be passed on from generation to generation. Making it the gift that will keep on giving to so many little girls.
Why did you choose to enter the GOTY competition? have you entered in the past and has it helped your brand grow?
This is the first time we have entered a product in the GOTY competition. We chose to enter the Danbury Dress because we are proud of its design, and the longevity of the product and that we are trying to instil the once-common pastime of gifting a special garment to children as an heirloom and something to cherish as appose to the fast fashion world we have found ourselves in today.
What other products will you be bringing to market in 2023?
In 2023 we are planning an occasion wear range, again all created from roll end and deadstock fabrics. Special garments for important occasions such as christenings and weddings and can be kept within the family and passed down for many generations to come.
