Calligraphy County Maps

Nicole Elders

There are 48 counties in England, 99 counties in the UK, some of which have borders that date back to the Middle Ages; making them the world’s oldest divisions, with stories that predate England. Our counties are a strong source of identity for nearly half the population, each county with its own unique identity, cultural heritage, dialect and customs. Just as half the population strongly identify with the place they are from, so to do many identify with places they have been visiting and holidaying in for years.

The richness of the identity of a county is such that there is not one image or one description that can sum up a county. A county is the sum of many parts; the towns, countryside the people – a rich mix of heritage, and culture, landscapes and history. The Calligraphy County Map series seeks to celebrate this, mixing the ancient art of calligraphy with contemporary design to celebrate everything that makes a county unique. Each map is geographically accurate (well as accurate as you can get in calligraphy), and feature the major towns and cities, fascinating stories and famous inventions, moments from history and amazing places to visit. This is a series that celebrates the places that matter to the people we love.
