Terracotta Microgreen Grower
Chimney Sheep Ltd
The Terracotta Microgreen Grower makes a great gift for almost anyone – young or old or any gender. It is designed to press the seeds into the felt to aid germination. The kit comprises the terracotta grower base + lid, a packet of Mustard & Cress microgreen seeds, a packet of Radish Rambo seeds, and 2 discs of our popular gardeners’ wool.
Available in two colours, natural terracotta and turquoise, the Microgreen Grower looks good in any living space. Seeing the seeds germinate and grow is a point of interest, and once grown, the Microgreen Grower adds a pop of colour and freshness to the living space. You can even grow flowers in it, creating a more sustainable option than cut flowers or flowering plants in peat and plastic.
How does the kit work?
Place a disc of felt in the base and water it quite well. Wool is hygroscopic, meaning it can hold a surprising amount of water without feeling wet.
Lightly sprinkle the seeds over the felt. Don’t use them all up, there’s enough in the packet for a couple of goes.
Put the lid on so that it squashes the seeds into the felt.
Leave it somewhere for 24 hours.
Flip the lid, so the seeds aren’t being squashed anymore but they’re still in the dark.
Leave it another 24 hours.
Take the lid off and peer in expectantly. The seeds should have germinated. Put the lid underneath, so it becomes the base.
Leave them somewhere light and water every so often.
Harvest the microgreens once they’re big enough to eat.
Removing plastics from our system, one piece at a time!
Fresh herbs and microgreens are delicious, nutritious, and bring a welcome burst of freshness particularly during the winter months. However, they are delicate, so to keep them intact in supermarkets it’s necessary to package them in plastic. Our microgreen growing kit will deliver a constant supply of microgreens minus the plastic.
Cost effective
Microgreens are expensive to buy and easy to grow. You can get refill packets of seeds – either from us or anyone you like really – and keep on growing. The wool pads can be used multiple times.
There are 2 wool pads and 2 packets of seeds. Each packet of seeds should do 2 sowings. So, you should get 4 harvests out of the kit. Then you can simply get more seeds and keep on growing.
Sustainability Credentials
The Terracotta Microgreen Grower Kit is made of terracotta and wool, both of which are highly sustainable materials. The kit will last many years or decades, but at the end of its life the terracotta is inert (basically like a piece of stone). The wool can be used multiple times and is compostable. The packaging is all recycled and labels are printed on recycled paper using vegetable based inks.
The terracotta is made in Spain; the felt is made in the UK and the kit is assembled in our solar-powered factory in Workington.
Growing our own microgreens at home reduces the amount of plastic we buy in the supermarket; it also reduces peat extraction which is the growing medium for most herbs and salads, and reduces food miles. The Microgreen Growing Kit is a great way of introducing children to growing their own food.
Materials Description
The lid and base are made of clay that is fired into terracotta, then glazed with natural materials that have been used by humans for millennia. The growing medium is a disc of felted sheep wool on a thin layer of jute.
The seeds are packaged in a glassine bag. The kit comes with instructions printed onto recycled paper, printed using vegetable based inks. It comes in a nice sturdy matchbox-style kraft box made of recycled card.
