In 1993 Kate, who has always loved stitching, ran out of kits she wanted to stitch and so decided to create her own. She started working in the bothy at the bottom of her parents’ garden in Reading - a rather cold and damp gardener’s cottage – and hence Bothy Threads was born! In 2013, Kate and her family decided to follow their hearts and move the business up to the Lake District, where they could enjoy the lakes and fells.

The local surroundings have always been a fabulous inspiration for Bothy Threads; paired with their ethos of supporting local artists, the partnership with the UK’s most popular published artist of 2022 seemed like the perfect combination!

Lucy Pittaway often takes inspiration from the sights and sounds of her life in the Yorkshire Dales and her love of the Lake District, which came from many holidays both in her childhood and now with her own family – a place very close to the hearts (and offices) of the team at Bothy Threads.
Lucy’s naïve, imaginative, bright and bold art transforms beautifully into counted cross stitch designs and Bothy Threads continue to strive towards Lucy’s original goal… to create art that makes people smile.

Of the 18 designs in the Lucy Pittaway Collection, let’s start with ‘Love And Light’, in which a couple of the trademark Herdwick sheep watch the idyllic, peaceful sunset over the lakes. Then we have ‘On Top Of The World’, where a family duo head out on an adventure as they scale the heights of the fells and mountains. Lastly, we have ‘Watching The World Go By’, inspired by the viaducts of North East England, these two cute Herdys are soaking up the Autumn sunshine.

All three kits include a generous quantity of pre-sorted stranded cotton and a piece of 14 count Zweigart Aida, cut to the required size. The also contain a needle, threaded onto a cardboard needle card, along with a detailed stitch diagram and instructions, which include QR code video links to help along the way. The finished designs measures 26 x 26cm, and can be stitched as a finished gift or given as a kit for someone to create their own piece of artwork. Either way, all these stunning designs bring back wonderful memories of the delights of the great British countryside.
