Honest Bottle
Honest
The Honest Bottle is the UK’s first designed and made reusable bottle, made entirely from post-consumer, recycled, single-use plastic bottles. The bottle has also been designed so that it can be easily recycled at the end of its natural life.
This lightweight reusable bottle is easy to carry and BPA free with an ergonomic, instantly recognisable cutting-edge design. It comes in a range of eight vibrant colours and, since the product was designed in London, the colours named after iconic areas of the capital including; Soho Yellow, Brixton Blue, Camden Pink, Notting Hill Violet, Shoreditch Orange, Hyde Park Green, Kensington Blue and Westminster Grey. The Honest Bottle is priced at £9.95 and is available to buy directly at www.honestbottle.com.
One of the key drivers for the creation of the Honest Bottle is down to the disturbing fact around 2.5 billion units of bottled water are sold through UK supermarkets each year, equating to more than 34,000 tonnes of single-use plastic. Worse still, as much as 30 per cent of this is imported from overseas, increasing further the negative impact of transport emissions.
We take the view that producers should take greater responsibility for the products they make. For us, this not only means using locally sourced, sustainable materials, and manufacturing the product in the markets they are sold, but we also take full responsibility for the product once it comes to the end of its natural life. This means that the bottle has been designed to be accepted in household recycling collections and consumers can use our take-back scheme so that we can recycle the strap.
Moreover, we have proved that quality doesn’t have to be compromised when making a ‘sustainable product’. Indeed, we believe that environmental/sustainable considerations should be embedded in the design process for every product.
As such, the Honest Bottle is made from 100 per cent recycled single-use bottles (rPET) and the cap is made entirely from recycled milk bottles (rHDPE); both of which are sourced within the UK. The strap is currently made from a combination of virgin TPU rubber and polycarbonate (PC), for which we are actively seeking a UK-sourced recycled alternative with the required functionality. Our packaging is also UK-sourced and 100% recyclable.
Once the Honest Bottle reaches the end of its usable life, it can be easily recycled. The bottle and lid are both fully accepted by household waste collections, whilst Honest will take responsibility for the strap by operating a take back scheme, ensuring that it is then sent in bulk to an appropriate recycling facility.
Honest Bottle has created a piece of truly sustainable merchandise, providing opportunities for businesses to promote reuse within their workplaces and at their events. In doing so, they are able to extract tangible value from waste. The Honest Bottle can even be customised with logos, custom colours and brand specific messaging.
For consumers, we have created a sustainably-produced reusable bottle that will further encourage the switch from single-use products and drive down plastic waste, as well as supporting British-made products.
However, this will only work if consumers can easily refill them. Unfortunately, public water fountains are currently sparse in the extreme and people often feel uncomfortable asking for their reusable to be filled at a restaurant or café, even when they have made a purchase.
To tackle this, our Honest Project aims to increase accessibility to publicly available drinking water in every country we operate. Honest will dedicate time and resource to install publicly available water refill points, using the proceeds from sales of the Honest Bottle. The Project will also campaign for the widespread installation of publicly available water fountains, highlight the quality and cleanliness of publicly available water and reduce barriers to requesting free water in managed premises.
We know that we’re not perfect, but we are honest about how we can improve. Ultimately, we want to be the ‘beacon’ for great products that are truly sustainable and British made.
Materials Description
We rightfully claim that our Honest Bottle is the only reusable bottle that has been designed and made locally, from UK sourced recycled single-use bottles. The Honest Bottle has also been purposefully designed so that it can be easily recycled at the end of its natural life. The due diligence we applied to our procurement means that the products we sell are truly sustainable. This not only means sourcing locally-produced recycled materials, but also creating new processes to adapt them to our needs. Furthermore, we manufacture only in the markets that they are sold. This not only creates local jobs but also minimises the transport miles that our products need to travel.
The bottle is made from 100 per cent recycled single-use plastic bottles (rPET). This post-consumer material is also food grade and originates directly from our UK supplier of recycled PET. The cap is made entirely from post-consumer recycled milk bottles (rHDPE). Furthermore, we bought the rHDPE ourselves direct from the UK recycler, to further guarantee the sustainability of our materials.
True to our brand name, we are honest about the fact that the strap is currently made from a combination of virgin TPU and polycarbonate (PC) which are both sourced from the UK. We are actively engaged in sourcing a locally-produced recycled alternative that performs to the required functionality.
Our packaging is also UK sourced cardboard and 100% recyclable. Although UK recycled carboard does exists, which would have been the preferred option, it was not commercially viable for us to use and so, on balance, we chose the most sustainable option that also enabled us to be competitive on price. Naturally, we will switch to a UK-source of recycled cardboard should the pricing become more favourable.
Currently, therefore, 80 per cent of the Honest Bottle is made from UK-sourced recycled materials and our aim is to reach 100 per cent as soon as practicable.
